Suspect identifiedGabriel Steven Garcia, 34 — identified by 9NEWS Investigations and The Denver Post. Lakewood Police had NOT released the name as of the Friday 6 November press conference, pending notification of next of kin. Garcia was killed by return fire at the scene. He was never charged, and no court will ever test the police account of what he did. No other person is named as a suspect in any source relied on here.
One-line summaryOn Thursday 5 November 2026, Lakewood police agents approached a man they linked by description to a hit-and-run earlier that day as he boarded an RTD bus at West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. Police say the man opened fire, killing Agent Nick Graham, 33, and wounding three other agents and a bystander. Agents returned fire, killing the man. The First Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating.

Why this file is stamped INVESTIGATION ONGOING: The stamp records only the position as it stands on 7 November 2026. A police agent was killed, three more were wounded, a bystander was hurt, and the man who opened fire is dead — but the investigation into what happened on that bus has not reported. The First Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, which investigates police use of deadly force, is still working, with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation supporting it. No finding has been published. This file also records an unusual fact plainly: the man police say fired the shots died at the scene, so he was never charged and no trial will ever test the police account. What this file says about him is therefore the police account and the reporting of it — attributed, not asserted as a court finding. If the investigation publishes findings, this file will be updated, dated, and re-stamped — never quietly rewritten.

THE CASE

The name on Friday

On Friday 6 November 2026, the day after the shooting, the Lakewood Police Department in Colorado named the officer who had been killed the night before: Nick Graham, 33. He had joined the department in 2019, become a field training agent in 2023, and worked in its investigations division on some of Lakewood's most serious crimes — homicide, domestic violence, stalking. His chief said he had handled 322 major-crime cases, the highest caseload on the team.

Graham came from a police family. His father had recently retired after police work, and his mother had worked in a crime laboratory. He had been recognised in 2023 with the department's Special Investigations Unit Wingman Award for gang intelligence work, investigative support, and helping with major investigations into false calls for emergency help. "His accomplishments tell us what he did," Chief Philip Smith said at the news conference on Friday. "The gratitude of those he helped tells us how much his service mattered."

That is how the case reached the public: first a shooting on a bus on Thursday evening, then a name on Friday. The shooting itself had taken about a minute. The chain that led to it had taken about three hours.

Three hours earlier: the hit-and-run

Just before 3:45 p.m. on Thursday 5 November, Lakewood police responded to a hit-and-run near Kipling Street and W 13th Avenue. The driver had run from the scene immediately. Witnesses at the scene were able to give officers a description of the man.

No source relied on for this file describes the crash itself in any detail — not the vehicle, not what it hit, and not whether anyone was hurt in it. The hit-and-run matters to this file for one reason only: it is how the police came to be looking for the man they found at the bus stop. The police account is that the description witnesses gave that afternoon is what an officer recognised, hours later, at West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. Whether the man who opened fire was in fact the driver in the hit-and-run has not been confirmed in any source relied on here. The link is by description, and this file records it as that — a link by description, not a confirmed identity.

For about three hours after the crash, the public record is silent. No source relied on here says what the man did between the hit-and-run and the bus, or where he went. That gap is part of the case, and the investigation may or may not fill it.

Six thirty on Colfax and Wadsworth

Around 6:29 p.m., an officer recognised a man who matched the hit-and-run description in the area of Colfax and Wadsworth, about five miles west of downtown Denver. The man was boarding a bus operated by the Regional Transportation District — a contracted vehicle on Route 76, with four passengers aboard, according to the transit district. The officer called for backup.

Several Lakewood agents responded. As they approached the man, he opened fire, according to the police. The call for shots fired came in at approximately 6:32 p.m., and the call for officer down at 6:33 p.m. Four agents were struck, and so was a bystander. The agents returned fire, killing the man.

A driver stopped at a red light nearby, Teddy O'Brien, 23, watched it happen. Several police cars had surrounded the bus before the officers approached from both sides, he told the Associated Press in a phone interview on Friday. "As soon as they get onto the bus on the other side, shots just start ringing out from both sides," he said. The bus's interior lights were on, and only one or two people besides the officer who boarded could be seen toward the back of the bus. O'Brien said the inside of the bus appeared to get smoky during the shootout, and he saw flashes of possible gunfire. He estimated that around 20 shots were fired.

"It was just scary, I didn't know what to do besides that," O'Brien said. "I didn't want like a stray bullet to hit me. It sounded at that point that bullets were flying everywhere." He tried to duck in his car and protect himself. "I honestly never thought I would see something like that in my lifetime," he said. "That was a hard thing to witness."

Three of the four agents who were shot survived. Two were released from hospital. A third remained in hospital on Friday — the Associated Press reported that everyone admitted to Denver Health Medical Center from the scene was discharged on Friday morning, and that one injured person remained at CommonSpirit-St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood with non-life-threatening injuries. The police did not release the condition of the hospitalised officer, and did not name any of the wounded officers or the injured bystander. The fourth agent, Graham, died as a result of his injuries.

The officer who died

In Lakewood, police officers are called agents, because the department was initially modelled after the FBI. Graham had become one of its most trusted investigators. He joined in 2019, moved from patrol to the major crimes unit, and became a field training agent in 2023, helping new officers develop their skills. "He understood that serving this community also meant supporting the people who served alongside him," Chief Smith said. "He coached less experienced officers, he assisted fellow investigations and volunteered when others needed help."

The chief's tribute went further than the record. "Nicholas' legacy lives in the officers he mentored, the victims he supported and the people he treated with dignity and care," Smith said. The department posted on social media: "Our hearts are heavy, and we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their loved ones, lifting them up in unwavering support, love, and prayer during this unimaginable time."

There is one small human detail in the reporting that the official statements do not carry. A regular rider on Route 76, Nate Weickum, told Denver7 that Officer Graham had talked to him earlier that day — a detail reported by Denver7 alone, and recorded here as reported. The bus driver, according to the same report, is physically fine, but the incident has left the transit community shaken.

After the shooting, dozens of area police officers assembled outside a hospital, and a bagpiper played "Amazing Grace" in tribute. A procession of police vehicles then proceeded to the coroner's office. People placed flowers on the hood of a police SUV as a memorial outside the Lakewood Police Department. Police from neighbouring agencies helped with patrols and calls while the department grieved. The mayor, Wendi Strom, said: "This is a tragedy for the family, friends and colleagues of all of these agents. Please know that City Council, city employees and the larger Lakewood community stand beside you with our deepest sympathy and unwavering support." She added: "We are profoundly grateful for the courage and selfless service of these agents who put themselves in harm's way to protect our community. In this darkest of hours, our demonstration of support and condolences are a reflection of the intense respect for the job our agents perform every day. While we are left with an incomprehensible loss, I ask our community to come together to mourn and to care for one another."

Colorado's governor, Jared Polis, said in a statement: "Law enforcement put their lives on the line for our safety every day. Thank you to law enforcement who run into danger to keep us safe and to protect our communities." The Regional Transportation District said it was deeply concerned by the shooting and was fully cooperating with the police.

The man who opened fire

The Lakewood Police Department did not release the name of the man who was killed. At the Friday press conference, the department's public information officer, John Romero, said the man still had not been identified, pending notification of next of kin. But two news organisations identified him independently: 9NEWS Investigations, which reported that the suspect was out on parole, and The Denver Post, which identified him as Gabriel Steven Garcia, a 34-year-old parolee with a 2017 felony conviction for assaulting a police officer. This file names him on that basis — identified by 9NEWS and The Denver Post, not released by the police — and records the difference, because the difference matters: the police had not confirmed the identification when this file was written.

What the reporting says about Garcia's past is this. In 2017, he attacked a sheriff's deputy, the reports say — punching the deputy and trying to strangle him, according to the Hindustan Times, which cited 9News. The deputy had been responding to a trespassing call. Garcia pleaded guilty to felony assault and was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2019. He was first paroled in December 2022. He was released on parole again in September 2026, according to 9News.

One outlet, Times Now World, gives a more detailed parole timeline, citing Colorado Department of Corrections records: Garcia was released on parole on 23 September 2026, was listed as an absconder — a parolee who fails to report — two days later, was picked up by the Broomfield Police Department on 28 September, and remained in custody until 20 October. That timeline comes from a single outlet in the sources relied on here, and this file labels it as such. No source relied on here explains the circumstances of his return to parole supervision, about two weeks before the shooting.

Garcia's history is in this file because the reporting of it is part of the case, and because it is the only public explanation on offer for how a man with a violent record against law enforcement came to be free on the day he encountered the Lakewood agents. It is not a motive. No motive has been stated for the shooting, and no source relied on here reports one. Garcia died at the scene, so no charge was ever filed against him, and no court will ever decide what he did or why. That is the hard limit on this file: the central act — who fired first, and why — rests on the police account alone, and the man who could have answered for it is dead.

What is still open

The investigation that matters now is not a search for a suspect. It is the First Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team's examination of a police use of deadly force, with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation supporting it. That is the standard process in Colorado when officers kill someone, and it is still running. No finding has been published.

The open questions are narrow, and they are the ones the investigation will have to answer. Was the man on the bus the driver in the hit-and-run, or only a man who matched a description? What happened in the three hours between the crash and the bus? What did the officers know, and what did they do, in the minute between the approach and the first shot? What is the condition of the bystander, and of the officer who remained in hospital? And what does the record show about Garcia's release back onto parole supervision in October, two weeks before he encountered the Lakewood agents?

That is where this file stops. A police agent was killed on a bus in Lakewood on Thursday 5 November 2026: Nick Graham, 33, a seven-year veteran who had become one of his department's most trusted investigators. Three of his colleagues were wounded, and a bystander was hurt. The man who police say opened fire was killed by return fire, and he will never be charged. The investigation into what happened on that bus is still open, and this file will follow it.
